Alternative ASEAN Network on Burma: A Force for Change

The Alternative Asean Network On Burma (ALTSEAN-Burma) has emerged as a significant player in advocating for democracy and human rights in Myanmar. Established in 2004, ALTSEAN-Burma serves as a vital platform for civil society organizations (CSOs) across Southeast Asia to collaborate, share information, and coordinate advocacy efforts concerning the situation in Myanmar.

As an alternative network, ALTSEAN-Burma operates independently of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) governmental structure. This independence allows the network to maintain a critical stance towards ASEAN’s policies and actions regarding the crisis in Myanmar, particularly its adherence to the non-interference principle.

A Platform for Civil Society Engagement

ALTSEAN-Burma distinguishes itself through its dedication to amplifying the voices of grassroots organizations and individuals directly impacted by the situation in Myanmar. The network prioritizes a people-centered approach, recognizing the crucial role of civil society in driving positive change.

The network facilitates regular dialogues and consultations among its members, fostering a space for sharing experiences, best practices, and strategies for advocacy. These interactions contribute to capacity building within civil society, enhancing their ability to advocate effectively for human rights, democracy, and social justice in Myanmar.

Challenging ASEAN’s Approach

A central aspect of ALTSEAN-Burma’s work involves scrutinizing and challenging ASEAN’s engagement with Myanmar. The network has consistently criticized ASEAN’s non-interference principle, arguing that it hinders the regional bloc’s ability to effectively address the crisis and hold the military junta accountable for its human rights abuses.

ALTSEAN-Burma calls for a more proactive and decisive approach from ASEAN, urging the regional body to:

  • Suspend Myanmar’s membership until the restoration of democracy.
  • Impose targeted sanctions against the military junta and its businesses.
  • Engage directly with the National Unity Government (NUG) and other pro-democracy actors.
  • Facilitate humanitarian aid and access to conflict-affected areas.

Amplifying Voices, Seeking Solutions

ALTSEAN-Burma plays a crucial role in amplifying the voices of the people of Myanmar on regional and international platforms. The network actively participates in ASEAN meetings and events, advocating for stronger action from the regional bloc and raising awareness about the situation on the ground.

Beyond advocacy, ALTSEAN-Burma actively explores alternative solutions to the crisis in Myanmar. The network facilitates dialogues between various stakeholders, including representatives from ethnic armed organizations, civil society groups, and the NUG, to seek common ground and explore avenues for peace and reconciliation.

A Vital Force for Change

“ALTSEAN-Burma plays a vital role in holding ASEAN accountable and pushing for a more effective response to the crisis in Myanmar,” says Aung Kyaw Moe, a prominent Myanmar human rights activist. “Their advocacy and networking efforts are crucial in ensuring that the voices of the people are heard and that the international community remains engaged.”

ALTSEAN-Burma stands as a testament to the power of regional solidarity and the vital role of civil society in advocating for human rights and democracy. As the situation in Myanmar remains volatile, the network’s continued efforts to amplify marginalized voices, challenge the status quo, and seek alternative solutions are more critical than ever.
